Spirits/ Liquors have a distinguished taste for everyone. That could be one's flavor profile, preferences, nostalgia or good old fashion marketing. There are a few spirits because of their lower price point and granular texture may not appeal to the masses. A top shelf liquor will normally be distilled longer and carry a smoother flavor.
